Beyond the Basics

Much of what we learn and know becomes better and more full once we get beyond the basics. We can do algebra becuse we learned how to add and subtract. We can write essays because we learned nouns and verbs. In fact, once we move beyond the basics we actually tend to forget how we got to more complex points. Or, maybe better said, we take for granted how we got there. May I be so bold to suggest that believers, Christians, do the same with the gospel of Jesus Christ? Isn't it often that we take the work of Christ on the cross and run to the next step...to the greater complexities of Christianity? Maybe it is the more intricate aspects of theology and doctrine or the fervent pursuit of our sanctification.

Now I am not suggesting that a greater knowledge of theology or living righteously are not to be desired. Both are good and often a sign of spiritual maturity. But, when the effect becomes more important than the cause we must question our affections and desires. Do we really love Christ - His work on our behalf to be saved from a life of sin and an eternity in hell and to enjoy Him forever, or do we love what we can get from Christ - identity, holiness and hope, among other effects of trusting Christ?

When we go beyond the basics of the gospel of Jesus Christ we take for granted His life - it was perfect, His death - it satisfied God's wrath, and His resurrection - it made Him the authority over all things. We ultimately forget how separated we were from God and that Christ's death and resurrection has reconciled us to God so that we may boldly approach His throne. So, I encourage us, in the matter of our walk with Christ, let's not go beyond the basics.
