Eat, drink and enjoy oneself…

To eat, drink and enjoy oneself sounds worldly doesn’t? Well, it isn’t. In fact, Solomon exhorts the reader in Ecclesiastes 5:18 to do just that...that is, as it relates to one’s labor.

Solomon writes, "Here is what I have seen to be good and fitting: to eat, to drink and enjoy oneself in all one's labor in which he toils under the sun during the few years of his life which God has given him; for this is his reward."

As I have been reading through Ecclesiastes, I have found much encouragement and freedom in this command! Enjoy my labor because the enjoyment of it is my reward here on earth. The enjoyment of my work here is God's gift to me.

So, turns out Snow White might be a better example of obeying this command than some believing women today. She whistled while she worked. Are you? Are you enjoying your labor as you do it and the results you get from it? I hope so!

  1. I don't whistle very well, but do sing while doing most of my work. Dusting, however, requires an extra measure of effort for enjoyment, so I leave that for times when my joy is abundant. Thanks for the rememberance that doing housework should come with praise of a place to live, making dinner with praise of food for my table, etc.
